Favorite First Dance Songs

Weddings are stressful. The invitations, the flowers, the caterers, the DJ...it’s enough to make even the most organized couple want to run screaming into the woods. So, we’ve made a list of our favorite first dance songs in case you’re feeling a little more overwhelmed than inspired... If you‘re looking for a first dance song that’s timeless, Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers is a great choice. And if you love it, you’re not alone. It was the most popular first dance song choice on multiple lists including The Black Tux’s survey of 900 wedding couples about their first dance song choice.  Another oldie-but-goodie that makes for an unforgettable first dance, even after all these years, is The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. Michael Bublé also has an amazing cover if you’re looking for a little more of a different feel.  At Last by Etta James is always a favorite first dance song for guests to hear and brings out all the feels for us every time we hear it.  Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You by Frankie Valli is a slightly less traditional choice, but we love it because it makes for a more dynamic first dance.  As far as more modern first dance choices go, we love All of Me by John Legend. You can’t help but feel romantic when listening to John Legend’s ballads and this one is one of his best, in our opinion.  And we can’t leave Adele off our list. Make You Feel My Love is one of our faves, which is the most popular of her songs as a first dance choice, but we also love When We Were Young, especially if you and your partner have a story of rekindled love.  The global number one choice for first dance songs last year was Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud, which we love, but since it’s been around for a while, we’ve heard it a lot. If you love Ed Sheehan, but you’re looking for something that doesn’t top the global first dance list, try Perfect. This is another good one if your story involves young love.  Of course no list about love songs is complete without Sam Smith. Our favorite is the acoustic version of Latch. It will tug at your heartstrings every time you hear it and makes for a beautiful moment that both you and your guests will remember forever. Natalie Taylor’s cover of Latch is a nice alternative if you’re looking for a first dance song by a female singer or if you’re looking for a recognizable song but one that’s a little more unique.  Our last favorite is great if you’re looking for something that’s more “indie.” First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes. It’s been one of our favorite sweet, romantic songs for years, and it would make for a great first dance of the rest of your life.  If you’re still feeling less than inspired, listen to Spotify’s Top 50 First Dance Songs playlist. You’ll find a lot of our favorites on there and plenty more. Grab your partner and a glass of wine and practice dancing on the living room carpet. The most important part of a first dance song is that it speaks to both of you. You never know what will inspire you!
