6 Tips for Your Wedding First Dance!

If you’re looking for the fundamental tips for your wedding first dance, you’ve come to the right post. Here are 6 quick tips that we think are the most important to make this moment one for the record books.

  1. This one is the MOST important, so read carefully! Pick a song that means something to you as a couple. It is so, so important for both of you as a couple to have a connection to the music. If you’re not feeling a sense of emotion welling up inside of you when you hear your first dance song, it’s going to be hard to get that emotion to spill out into your dancing. It’s also important for you to choose a song that you can easily dance to. You want to feel comfortable and confident for your first dance, and a difficult song won’t inspire either of those feelings.

  2. Keep the choreography under 3 minutes. This may seem short, but while you’re dancing, a minute seems like an eternity. It will seem like the perfect length to your guests, too. They’re excited to share this iconic wedding moment with you, but they want to get back to the celebration part just as much as you do.

  3. Take dance lessons to prepare. Whether you decide on making your first dance a choreographed piece or you decide to improvise or social dance to your wedding song, take at least a couple dance lessons. It will really help you feel confident and prepared. Even if you already have dance experience, your wedding first dance has a lot more pressure on it than you realize! So, give yourself all the tools you need to make it everything you want it to be. You never know, your wedding dance lessons may spark a new love for both of you as a couple! It will certainly make you feel more connected and bring you closer together- a wonderful side effect.

  4. Practice together! Again, whether you’ve chosen to dance a choreographed piece or improvise your first dance, you need to practice to get that level of confidence we’ve been talking so much about.

  5. Relax. Seriously. You’ve got this. Sure, it’s a big moment, but it’s really all about you and your partner. And you know you love them more than anything. This is your special day and you should enjoy every moment of it including your first dance. Look at your partner and smile! It’s amazing how much of a difference this makes. Remember you are not alone- you’re in this together.

  6. Shine! If you’ve chosen to dance to a fun song- get into character. Really live in the moment and embody the joy of your song. If you’ve chosen a more romantic song- connect with your partner. Surprise the audience with clear, intense facial expressions. This will really help to tell your story. Whatever you choose, remember that your guests want to see you enjoying yourselves. They’ll love it if you love it.
